Andrew Peterson discusses his new book, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, in an exclusive interview with Suite101.com.

Andrew Peterson proves that his talent lies in more than just writing songs. He has successful tried his hand at being an author. Peterson's first book, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness: Adventure. Peril. Lost Jewels. And the Fearsome Toothy Cows of Skree, will be released March 18th, 2008.

Being a fan of fantasy, it is no surprise that Peterson went that route with his new book. On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness is the first in a fantasy triology for young adults. He creates a realistically tangible world called Aerwiar with an interesting history. In this last part of the interview, Peterson tells us a little more about the story.

Suite101: What made you decide to have Leeli be crippled?

Andrew: All will be made clear, young Padawan. All I can say is that from the very beginning I saw her with wild curly hair and a little crutch under her arm. Just like I saw Peet the Sock Man's stockings on his arms as he somersaulted through town. When I was writing the story there was a part of me that already knew why these things must be, but there was also another part of me that couldn't wait to find out.

Suite101: The few illustrations, done by Justin Gerard, add to the story. Did you give any direction to Justin?

Andrew: I've wanted Justin to illustrate the books since I first saw his work years ago. He also illustrated the cover to my last record The Far Country. I gave him some direction, but my (wonderful) editor had a lot of input on which scenes would be depicted. From the beginning I wanted the book to be heavily illustrated, like the Spiderwick Chronicles and The Edge Chronicles, but having it more sparsely illustrated turned out to be so much better. It leaves more to the reader's imagination, which is far more powerful than Justin's pencil, formidable though it is.

Suite101: Do you have any plans for more adventures in Aerwiar once the Wingfeather saga is complete?

Andrew: I would love to explore the far corners of Aerwiar some day, but first I want to find out what happens to those poor Igiby children. I've seen their future in glimpses, and getting there will be quite a trip.
